Common Ground Translation Service

Common Ground Translation Service provides professional English, Chinese and Tibetan translations and transcriptions. We offer simultaneous, in-person translations in Dharamsala and surrounding areas as well as online document, audio and video transcriptions.

We also provide information sessions for journalists, researchers, writers and filmmakers including the following:

  • In-depth Q & A’s about Tibet
  • Updates about the current situation inside Tibet
  • Historical and cultural background on Tibet, Dharamsala and exile Tibetan communities
  • Information about the Tibetan Government in Exile, Tibetan NGOs and International Tibet Support Groups
  • Coordinating relevant contacts and interviews as needed

By providing a professional translation service with a team of translators, we also help generate part-time employment as well as provide experience and opportunities for Tibetan exiles in the Dharamsala community. Please note that we generally do not accept commercial translation projects.

Our team of translators and fixers have served various agencies including TIME, Washington Post, CNN, BBC, Reuters, Associated Press, AFP, The New Yorker and Financial Times.

For a quote on your translation project or to book for information sessions, please contact us with the details and needs of your project.

Common Ground Translation Service is a nonprofit venture of Common Grounds Project, a registered nonprofit in the state of Himachel Pradesh, India.

Community Film Library

We are currently in the process of establishing a Community Film Library in Common Ground Café. We have collected over 300 films, featuring a large number of educational films and documentaries which will be available for rent for Common Ground members in the Dharamsala area.

We welcome individuals to volunteer with us on a long term or project basis in Dharamsala or via online correspondence. We are currently looking for:

Developers to build various social media applications and widgets to enhance our online visibility, such as developing Facebook integrated applications and other social media apps.

Chinese – English translators to translate various articles and documents online.

Graphic designers to help create designs for t-shirts and other Common Grounds fundraising merchandise.

Volunteering in Common Ground Café!

We also welcome volunteers with a minimum one-month part-time commitment to work in Common Ground Café in Dharamsala.

If you are interested in volunteering with us in any of the above-mentioned positions, please contact us.

The Exile Fund

The Exile Fund was set up by the Common Grounds Project to help low-income and newly arrived Tibetan refugees in the Tibetan exile community of Dharamsala in difficult financial circumstances.

From out of pocket medical expenses and school fees to reuniting long lost family members in exile, we address the hardships of life in exile for ordinary Tibetans. By lifting individuals out of a cycle of financial instability through financial assistance, we empower our recipients to be debt-free and self-reliant.

Below is a list of individuals whom we've assisted through Common Grounds Project's Exile Fund.

  • Tsewang Dhondup - Family reunion
  • Choedon & Lhakpa Tsering - Birth delivery
  • Pema & Lobsang Rabsel - Birth delivery and school fees
  • Kelsang - Family reunion
  • Janchup & Nyima Lhamo - Birth delivery
